Her hair like silk flew through the wind as she looked down at her demolished creation. Feathers hung lose from the delicate creature. Its eyes gazed open, same as the moment before it hit the ground, before it knew its outcome, like it was standing still in time. Tears swept her face as she bent down to pick it up, but stopped, for she knew it was no longer in her grasp.
"I told you to watch out for humans little one. They hunt you for game and broil you for food. They have no respect for you, for others of their kind, for me. They have no respect for me, Life."
She continued to sob with no knowledge of the shadow like figure behind her. "Are you done mourning Life?" the figure called from behind. "I'd like to do my job if that's fine with you."
She stepped to the side as the figure walked towards the lifeless creation. From its cloak, long, knife like hands reached and delicately took the bird into his grasp, and in a flash, it turned into nothing but ashes in which the figure carelessly dropped into the dirt.
She wiped her tears and turned away, the wind swaying in the same direction she had spun. "May I ask you something, Death?"
The figure sat in the ash filled dirt and turned to her, not giving back a word in reply. Assuming she could ask she glanced at him from the side. "Why? Why do you take my beautiful creations out of this world?"
The figure let out a small chuckle and lowered its hood, revealing a hideous face, a face no human could ever imagine. It was the image of sheer terror. "So naïve you are Life… Without you, there cannot be me. Without me, you fail to exist. Without Death there is nothing to live for. If I don't steal the souls of your "beautiful" creations, I will have no purpose."
She sighed and slumped down, now sitting back to back with him. "I guess that's true. And that wouldn't be quite fair." He managed a smile and sighed in reply.
"You're telling me." He lifted his hood back over his face and sat up. "I have to go. I have an appointment at three o'clock." She looked up and watched him walk off. She needed to know though. The one question she wanted to ask, the answer meant more to her than anything. She jumped out of the dirt and called to him.
"Death! Wait! I need to know!" He turned and raised his brow at her. She looked him in the sockets he called eyes and took a breath. "Why do people hate you, but love me?"
Death then answered, "Because you are a beautiful lie, and I, am a painful truth." He kept walking, but she still needed more. She ran after him screaming his name. Life is just like us humans. She always wants to understand, but can't.
The quote in there, about life asking deah why people love her but hate him, was taken from a quote written by an unknown author. It is notmine. :) Enjoy.
